Rapelling a mountain cliff at one of Educo Canada's youth adventure coursesStep out of your comfort zone to see beyond preconceived limitations.

All Educo courses are dedicated to the development and support of young people to draw forth their full and unique potential. The school provides unparalleled opportunities for participants to examine their beliefs about themselves, other people and the world around them. Students are encouraged and assisted to challenge themselves and to support each other, to develop a respect for the environment and the natural world, to express themselves fully and creatively, to participate in the adventures of life and to accept opportunities to learn and grow in each moment. These skills greatly enhance their confidence in themselves and desire to make a difference to their families, peers, schools, communities and the world at large.

Mission Statement

Learn the importance of your differences,
the depth of your similarities.

Camp-side stories, rapelling, canoeingThe purpose of Educo is to offer experiential outdoor adventure/
challenge programs that guide individuals and groups to discover the true qualities of character inherent in us all. We believe that the recognition and expression of this potential will lead to a healthy, balanced individual, society and world.

Objectives

Some of Educo's objectives are to encourage both individuals and groups to:
Engage in experiences that challenge and stretch self-limitations
Recognize and appreciate the unique qualities of every individual
Assume personal responsibility
Foster the development of decision-making, communication, teamwork and group interaction skills.
Foster respect, understanding and awe for the natural world and our place in the circle of life.

We seek to:
Ensure all levels of the school operate on the principles of respect, integrity, honesty, tenacity and fortitude.

Educo's Green Policy

At Educo, the outdoors is our classroom and the best way to give awareness and appreciation for the environment is to experience it! That is why we work hard to preserve and protect the diverse ecological areas that we live in and travel to. Low impact camping, recycling, organic foods and biodegradable cleaning products are key components of every course. From the unique wetlands and swamps surrounding the Educo site to the pristine alpine mountains, awareness, wonder and respect for the natural world are promoted and encouraged with all of our activities.

Educo Adventure School and Quest University Canada, a new Liberal Arts and Science University in Squamish, BC have become educational partners through a Memorandum of Understanding signed recently. This partnership will grant students who have attended a Senior Educo program and have a letter of recommendation from the Executive Director favourable consideration in their application to attend Quest.

Educo History

Alpine hiking during one of Educo Canada's youth courses Educo was founded in 1969 by Geoff Tisch, a New Zealander living in British Columbia, Canada. Geoff felt the youth of the day needed some real challenges in their lives so Educo was created as an outdoor program designed to challenge the character and stamina of young men. Programs for young women began 15 years later.

Educo was incorporated under the BC societies Act and obtained Charity status in May of 1970. In the mid-seventies, a Welsh mountaineer on staff began including mountain hikes, rappelling and caving in the Educo activities.

Educo continues to grow and evolve. The courses are the result of over 30 years of experience, yet are constantly adapted to reflect the changing needs of today's youth.

From this simple beginning, Educo Schools have opened in a number of different countries and an international alliance is in the developmental stages.

Relationship to Educo International

Educo International seeks to foster the development of youth and promote the multi-cultural connections within and between each school.

In 1988, the second Educo Adventure School was started in the United States in Colorado, and now there are Educo organizations in South Africa, Bulgaria, Brazil, and Germany. As an international organization, Educo is able to offer a broader range of experiential outdoor programs to people from all parts of the globe.

It is a unique opportunity to share resources, exchange ideas and inspiration, provide cross-cultural experiences for both staff and students, and remain connected in the face of so much global change.

Though the country and culture may differ, the fundamental philosophy and the magic that happens on each course is the same!
